Grounding Marine Research in Community Feedback
The Byssal Marine Science Institute (BMSI) was founded to connect ocean research and education back to the community through interdisciplinary teams. Our collaborators pledge to develop learning tools (e.g. K-12 lesson plans and easy-access guides) in conjunction with educator feedback.
We believe research should not be limited to a peer-reviewed scientific publication held behind a paywall or a “white page” on best practices buried in a decadal survey. True research integrity stems from accountability and a willingness to engage with the public. The team at BMSI facilitates open-access, public-facing engagement on research results and reincorporates community feedback in industry-leading actionable science best practices.
Our Name
Marine science research has always pushed the boundaries on the edge of discovery — from Cousteau to Carson and explorers in between, marine scientists must carry a sense of resiliency and gumption. With our name, we celebrate that spirit of, “Life on the edge,” as it stems from the byssal threads of mussels — super-strong fibers that anchor these bivalves to rocks and allow them to remain steady against powerful ocean waves. As the Institutional home for researchers and collaborators tested by turbulent United States federal scientific support system in 2025, we carry the spirit of byssal fibers in our pursuit of scientific discovery.
Mission Statement
The Byssal Marine Science Institute exists to bridge researcher and community collaboration, creating actionable learning tools for discovery and responsible ocean-coastal engagement.
