Gabrielle Jones, M.S.
Gabrielle Jones is a marine scientist whose past research has included oyster-microplastic studies and macroinvertebrate indicators of freshwater stream health. Gabrielle received her M.S. in Marine Biology at the College of Charleston where she also served as an introductory college laboratory instructor, K-12 community educator, and marine science assistant librarian. Her past work also includes many hours teaching difficult scientific concepts (e.g., the pH scale is logarithmic) to elementary schoolers as an Education Program Support Specialist. As an enthusiastic hands-on teacher, Gabrielle strives to inspire her students to engage with the scientific method (including robust statistical analysis!) In her free time, Gabrielle enjoys baking bread and practicing figure skating, a hobby she took up to alleviate the stressors of graduate school.
An Eye for Best-Practices in Experiential Education
As a teacher trained in Experiential Education, Gabrielle brings hands-on learning to students in the classroom and an eye for engaged learning practices in her role on the Board of Directors for the Byssal Marine Science Institute.
Hands-On Learning
Experiential Education emphasizes student engagement through hands-on problem-solving and, “Learning-by-doing,” often in outdoor or field conditions.
Reflections & Connections
In Experiential Education students are asked to make connections by reflecting on how the lesson has built on their skills and knowledge outside of the immediate lesson objective
Leadership & Confidence
By building on their skills and being allowed to make inferences based on past learning, students in Experiential Education build confidence and leadership skills.
