Bridging marine research & education.
A modern collaborative research institute
Our organization actively conducts marine science research informed by community knowledge, and then we put those results in the hands of educators.
Science does not need to happen in a vacuum, in an ivory tower, or unconnected to community and industry. In fact, the roots of scientific curiosity are in driving progress and a deeper understanding of our world for the benefit of society. Our organization actively conducts marine science research informed by community knowledge, and educating non-scientists using easy-to-understand language so that we may conduct research that matters in the lives of everyday people.
The Byssal Marine Science Institute (BMSI) was founded as a modern research organization that integrates public learning through learning resources (e.g., free K-12 lesson plans) and direct educator-outreach into every project we conduct. Today’s students should have the chance to learn from recent marine research results, and we exist to fill that gap. No research results should exist in a peer-review vacuum, results belong in the hands of future scientists (and their very capable teachers).
